  2. What is patriotism? Is it loyalty to a spot on a map, marked off from others spots by blue or yellow lines, the spot where one was born? But birth is a pure accident; surely one is in no way responsible for having been born on this spot or on that … Does patriotism mean loyalty to a political system and its institutions, constitutional, autocratic, republican or whatnot? But if history has made anything unmistakably clear, it is that from the standpoint of the individual and his welfare, these are no more than names.

According to the Daily Mail, Britons suffer 1,158,957 violent crimes per year, which works out at 2,034 per 100,000 residents. By contrast the number in notoriously violent South Africa is 1,609 per 100,000.

    The U.S., meanwhile, has a rate of 466 crimes per 100,000 residents, which is lower than France’s, at 504; Finland’s, at 738; Sweden’s, at 1123; and Canada’s at 935.

NY Daily News as a good article on Chicago gun violence compared to NYC.

506 people were killed by guns in Chicago in 2012. 44 people were killed by guns in Chicago in January alone. Meanwhile, homicide rates in other big cities like Los Angeles and New York have been on the decline in recent years. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/12/28/us-usa-crime-murder-idUSBRE8BR0LV20121228

Chicago has no civilian gun ranges and bans on both assault rifles and high-capacity magazines. Yet the Chicago Police Department reports that between 2001 and March 2012, it recovered more than 50,000 guns — more than half of which came from out of state. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/30/us/strict-chicago-gun-laws-cant-stem-fatal-shots.html?pagewanted=all

Youth are the number one target of Chicago’s homicide epidemic, according to the Chicago Reporter. The sobering reality: “From 2008 through 2012, nearly half of Chicago’s 2,389 homicide victims were killed before their 25th birthdays.” http://www.chicagoreporter.com/news/2013/01/youths-are-no-1-target-chicago-s-homicide-epidemic

Segregation is still a really big deal. Last month, the New York Times reported that Chicago’s homicides have “mostly taken place in neighborhoods west and south of Chicago’s gleaming downtown towers.” Don’t believe it? Here’s a map.

There have been nearly 1,800 gun deaths nationwide since the Newtown massacre in December, 2012, according to Slate. And that’s an admittedly low estimate. Slate teamed up with the Twitter feed @GunDeaths to collect data for a crowdsourced interactive graphic. http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/crime/2012/12/gun_death_tally_every_american_gun_death_since_newtown_sandy_hook_shooting.html

Young people are at the center of this epidemic. Youth are the number one target of Chicago’s homicide epidemic, according to the Chicago Reporter. The sobering reality: “From 2008 through 2012, nearly half of Chicago’s 2,389 homicide victims were killed before their 25th birthdays.”

But you are allowed to believe the think progress article, that the honorable elected officials have curbed gun violence, through the banning of guns.

  12. Why is it that every time I see the picture of the “No Homework in Finland,” I see that many people are okay with the government initiating force for the so-called betterment of society.
Let’s just say it is better for argument sake, would you kill someone who doesn’t want to give to that cause? You might say, but they will most likely incarcerate them. Okay incarceration or jail is another word for kidnap, would you kidnap someone in your basement if they did not want to contribute to this cause, and if they try to escape would you kill them or tell them that they would be locked in your basement for a longer time?

I am not asking if the so-called government will do whatever action you deem is right, but will you do it? Would you personally kill for that cause?

No matter how honorable or valid you might feel the cause is, initiating violence to obtain what you feel is best for society is wrong. We do not need to initiate violence to create a prosperous education system.

  13. If the American public were shown images of war everyday, no one would ever support war. Seeing war is very different from hearing about war. The media doesn’t show us war, they tell us about it.
